Les Américains nomment Chicago "Windy City", la cité des vents. Est-ce pour cette raison que, de Gene Ammons à Chico Freeman, la grande métropole du Nord a toujours été la place-forte des grands souffleurs que sont les saxophonistes ? Empruntant son titre au surnom de Chicago, notre documentaire y déroule une promenade musicale avec pour guide le son ample et âpre à la fois des saxophonistes d’ici. Son expressivité parfois violente, issue du blues, raconte toute l’histoire de cette ville. Une ville de ségrégation où les luttes pour les droits des Noirs ont été particulièrement dures et sanglantes. Une ville de contrastes et de paradoxes où se côtoient l’extrême richesse et l’extrême pauvreté. Une ville “aux épaules larges” pour résister aux vents contraires qui l’agitent...
From time to time, as today, Chicago musicians take up centre stage, blowing the Chicago sound far and wide and impulsing a new breath into the jazz scene. Maybe it’s because Chicago is the Windy City that it’s always been a fertile ground for great saxophonists. In search of the Chicago sound, "City of the Winds" is a musical stroll across Chicago in the company of locally-born jazz singer Ellen Christi, who began her career here before leaving for New York. To find out what makes the Chicago jazz scene so special, the film takes us through the city’s jazz clubs, lets us meet up with local writers and hear some of the best contemporary Chicago musicians. "City of the Winds" proposes a prolific panorama of their talent and creative spirit - sustained by a deep sense of community- as well looking into the historical importance of the development of jazz.
